#MaybeHeDoesntHitYou campaign notes other types of abuse

Users of the social media site Twitter may have noticed the trending hashtag “#MaybeHeDoesntHitYou.” This campaign that grew legs and spread across the Internet was an attempt by a Dominican-American writer to address the worldwide problem of emotional and psychological abuse by intimate partners.

Much of the problem of domestic violence in intimate relationships has focused on the aspects of physical abuse, and that is for good reason. It’s usually the most obvious, can cause the victims serious injury or even death and is considered to be socially abhorrent. Yet the more insidious types of abuse within relationships also are damaging. Consider some of the trending messages left by social media users all over the world:

— “#MaybeHeDoesntHitYou but he tells you he’ll kill himself if you break up with him.”

— “#maybehedoesnthityou but he tells you to go kill yourself when he knows you’re often suicidal”

— “#maybehedoesnthityou but he says you should be grateful he doesn’t”

— “#MaybeHeDoesntHitYou but he never lets you forget that he could leave you for someone prettier, less “slutty,” less emotional, less damaged.”

Partners emotionally abuse their victims in private and put on a good front in public, making others find it difficult to believe that they could be so cruel. The ways that they can do this are myriad, and all methods undermine the victim’s self-esteem and perceived value to others.

No one should have to put up with abuse in their personal relationships. If you recognize yourself or your relationship with your spouse or partner in any of the above tweets, a Maryland family law attorney can help you take the steps that you need in order to break free from the dysfunction.Source: Madame Noire, “#MaybeHeDoesntHitYou: Explores the truths about emotional abuse,” Veronica Wells, May 11, 2016
