Actor facing domestic violence charges after argument

Maryland soap opera fans may be familiar with the work of Aiden Turner, the actor who plays Aiden Devane on the show "All My Children." Turner was recently the subject of far less flattering attention, however, when he was arrested for domestic violence. He is now facing four misdemeanor charges after an argument with his girlfriend escalated into a physical confrontation.

The case is illustrative of the many forms that domestic violence can take. In this instance, Turner and his girlfriend were in the middle of an argument when the actor decided to throw a television remote control at her. It struck her face, and resulted in a cut and bruising.

For many people, the definition of domestic violence is focused on a very narrow range of acts. Hitting, kicking, and other acts of direct person-to-person violence are usually what come to mind when the subject arises. However, it is important to understand that any act based in aggression and leading to harm is an act of domestic violence. In the case mentioned here, there was no direct contact between Turner and his girlfriend. However, his decision to throw an object at her resulted in physical harm, which meets the definition of domestic violence.

There are many Maryland residents who live within situations that are on the borderline of being abusive. While it can be difficult to accept that one's partner is not acting in a manner that is loving or respectful, allowing domestic violence to go unreported can be a dangerous choice. In many cases, actions that begin on a lesser scale, such as throwing items during an argument, can escalate to far more serious altercations. For those who live within this type of environment, it is important to learn more about the protections available under Maryland law.
