After being married for 12 years, actor David Arquette has filed for divorce from actress Courteney Cox. Residents in Maryland may know Arquette, 40, from the movie "Scream" which was a box office hit in the 1990s. Cox, 47, rose to stardom in the 1980s television sitcom "Family Ties."
The divorce filing came after the couple had been separated for approximately two years. The two had starred together in the film "Scream" in 1996 and then married in June 1999.
The couple announced a 'trial separation' in October 2010, while court records report that they officially separated on Dec. 31, 2011. Although they have decided to end their marriage, the couple's separation has not been as combative as other Hollywood divorces. They filed for joint custody of their 8-year-old daughter. The divorce petition cited the standard "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for ending the marriage. It is unclear as to what kind of arrangements will be sought in terms of child support and alimony payments.
Although divorce can be an emotionally difficult situation for many couples, the negative aspects of the process can be partially alleviated if the couple's separation is reasonably amicable. This makes any mediation or negotiation process somewhat easier since the couple can still discuss important issues, such as property division and child custody, in a more logical and civilized manner. Additionally, mediation between amicable couples in Maryland and elsewhere may help save time and money, particularly as compared to a contentiously litigated and heated divorce battle.
