Spousal Support And Alimony Attorney In Rockville

Money issues are often the source of argument during a divorce. Couples frequently disagree about how property is to be split, and if spousal support/alimony payments are warranted. Though the courts do not award spousal support (alimony) in every divorce, it is always an issue to be thoughtfully evaluated.

Having handled divorces and other family law matters for nearly 25 years, clients come to my office for advice and guidance in these types of issues. I am alimony attorney Steven J. Gaba and I pride myself on offering divorcing clients a straightforward assessment of their divorce and spousal support-related situation. Whether you are seeking support payments or attempting to prevent them from being ordered, I can help.

If you have questions or concerns about spousal support, contact my office in Rockville, Maryland, today and schedule a consultation.

Factors That Are Considered

When the courts are making a determination about whether or not spousal support should be ordered, and in what amount, they take a number of factors into consideration, such as:

  • How long the couple was married
  • The age of each party
  • The health of the parties
  • The amount of income of each party
  • The reasonable needs of the party requesting support
  • How long it will take the party seeing support to become self-supporting
  • The post-divorce income-earning potential of the parties

Modifications Of Spousal Support

Much like child custody and support modifications, changes can be made to an existing spousal support order if one of the parties has experienced a significant change in his or her life circumstances. Spousal support may be increased or decreased depending on the changes in circumstances. These may include loss of income by the party paying support, or increase in income of the party receiving support. Court-ordered support will terminate if the party receiving support remarries.
